Tidings of the End
He brought me tidings of the end,
Of lunatics who would ascend,
To places in the heaven’s height,
With dreadfulness and spite.
With poisonous, pernicious thoughts,
With venom that the heart distorts,
Alacrity in wreaking ill,
With otherworldly skill.
He jabbered madly, jabbered wild,
By carousels of death beguiled,
His movements so ungainly styled,
A tense and troubled child.
He brought me tidings of decay,
Of dolefulness and raw dismay,
Of murders caked into the clay,
Of heavens borne away.
He brought me tidings of demise,
Of astral horrors in the skies,
Of mounfulness in sad reprise,
Of wry satanic lies.
He told of starlight painted black,
Of hippogriffs in brave attack,
Of angels in a gunny sack,
And ogres on the track.
He brought me tidings of the end,
Of devils with their spears to send,
Of rivers hotly boiling dry,
And drugs to bend the eye.
He brought me visions of the lake,
With witches burning at the stake,
With choruses pronouncing hell,
An unpropitious knell.
He carried tell of pestilence,
Ubiquitous malevolence,
Of dragons shrieking on the wing,
Pretending to be king.
Iniquities on altar stone,
Unsightliness the saints bemoan,
Such bloody ways a frightful craze,
And death to rule our days.
He grabbed me by the overcoat,
Describing wicked wars remote,
Of demons rising up to gloat,
And curses deftly wrote.
I shuddered deeply, shuddered long,
Despondency abiding strong,
The ruination of the world,
Egregiously unfurled…
