The Uncertain Hour

The Uncertain Hour

Into deeper silence I descend—
Loneliness to mark the sullen hour,
In narcotic emptiness I cower!
Contemplating visions of the end!

Vagaries of pain upon the heart,
Endings where beginnings should have been,
Hiding in a lassitude unseen,
Dolefulness to rend the mind apart!

Watching as the candle slips away,
Coveting the brightness of the flame,
Till tenebrous nothingness remain,
Night to bring a muteness to the day!

Stepping through the gladness of past,
And the treasured goodness that I saw,
Gifts from out a providential shore,
God in all His brightness given vast.

Memories of gardens giving cheer,
Sunlight falling golden on the ground,
Fountains with a gentleness to sound,
Reveries presented to my ear.

Satutes with their secrets to confide,
Fortitude through all the rush of time,
Stoicism realised sublime,
Long abiding riteousness inside.

Otherworldly moonlight on display,
Hung above the darkly roaming sea,
Prettying the oceanside in glee,
Glimmering in silver on the bay.

Even love in eloquent decree,
From the lips of lovers that I knew,
Underneath the summers painted blue,
Romance into which I’d fondly flee.

But the grip of devils pull me low!
Into mad decrepitude I fall!
Apathy and doubtfulness to gall!
Lost within a soporific flow.

Speaking to the spectres of the pit,
With a wan, dissociated stare,
All of them conversant in despair,
On a throne of callousness I sit…
