Enigmatic Midnight

Enigmatic Midnight

Enigmatic midnight landing,
Like a darksome drape expanding,
With a silence so commanding,
As the starlight hits in white.

Such a glut of lunar glory,
O’er creation’s stricken story,
Damnable and ghastly gory—
I am such a troubled wight!

Warfare through the ages breaking,
With the babes of Adam quaking,
With the saints in earnest shaking,
Mourning us in sore affright.

Silky shadows on the houses,
Curses that the wind espouses!
As the ghostly moon carouses,
With the stars upon the night.

Catacombs of silence stretching,
High Selene supremely fetching,
Art upon the treetops sketching,
Silhouettes to charm the sight.

Smoke from out the houses pluming,
Sulphurous the hexes fuming,
Hell in eerie madness looming,
Like a dog prepared to bite.

Maledictions in the making,
Devils in the darkness waking,
Destinies abysmal breaking,
Underneath the heavens bright.

Branches in the gardens burning,
With the winter weather turning,
With its coldness ever spurning,
Jesus and His holy light…
