A Black Silhouette

A Black Silhouette

The chain mail sky
Waxing lachrimose
Sends great swathes of tears
Across the bluff
Emptying a limitless grief—
The knowledge of man’s imbecilic wars
And the interminable trouncing
Of the fragile creation with newfound turmoil
The very aethers are in mourning
The very cliffs awash with pain
The indomitable earth utterly moribund with vexation
Hounded by galling blasphemies
Encircled by the chasm darkness
And saturated by fermenting fears
By rank iniquities parading in gusto
Poisonous and proud
Like radioactive waste
Like spilled acid
The earth a dumping ground
A stupendous vault of error
With the overwhelming debasement of men
Mouldering in the peat
And the very roots
Of the catatonic trees

A black silhouette is all I am now
Hollow, like the cavity in the towering oak
Where the owl sits aloof
Jabbering in soliloquy to the wicked night
And the only sensate commentary
Available to my anthrophobic ears
Is the undaunted wind
Giving sibilants and faint whispers of sanity
Through the sun slaked afternoon
And into the lunatic night
When the old dimensions
From lost aeons and faraway dramas
Seek me out in desperation
Like so many zombie arms
Craven and bereft
In search of love
Almost entirely inscrutable now
In that lost city which blundering Adam built
Love — that mercurial balm that evaporated
In the hell winds and fray
And naught of hope might be discovered
In the insensate form I now represent
For I am hollow and dead
Like the cavity in the grand old oak
Like the dumb blackness of the infinite sands
Like the silence uttered by the estuary at dawn
And barren darkness
Can lend no heroism or breakthrough
To a tragically broken dream
