Demon Flying Over the Caucasus

Demon Flying Over the Caucasus

With the winds of winter vying,
Over deserts far outlying,
Borne upon the aether flying,
Wings outstretched and racing long.

From the host of heaven shying,
All the truth of Christ denying,
Overcome with sombre sighing,
Raised above the earthly throng.

Holiness and hope decrying,
On my precious wits relying,
Only wilderness espying,
Given to a lonely song.

All the pain so horrifying,
All the tumult mortifying,
Only heartache amplifying,
Sordid spectres wreaking wrong.

In a coldness stupefying,
In a storm revivifying,
All my sorrow testifying,
Through the nightshades lurching strong.

As the past is putrefying,
Miseries so terrifying,
Perilous and stultifying,
Haunting as I race along.

All the future mystifying,
Only kindness glorifying,
This my being justifying,
In a hellscape overlong.

Godlessness intensifying,
Loneliness unsatisfying,
Suffering electrifying,
Hollow chants for evensong…
