Here My Bride

Here My Bride

Here my bride in bricks and mortar,
Here the arching window pane,
Here the leather covered psalter,
Here the glass in ruby stain.

Soft devotions seek my person,
From the hall and from the pew,
“God above don’t let it worsen!
Tell me — what am I to do?”

Heaven sees the meek believer,
Heaven sees humility,
Faith dispels the wry deceiver,
Bringing new tranquility.

Candles at the altar flicker,
Warm the reach, the lustre red,
Care abounding from the vicar,
Naming he that died and bled.

Here my bride, and faithful ever,
Here my sanctuary in stone,
Never wilt mine heart dissever,
Servants who my name intone.

Languid shadows darksome falling,
Hymnal tracts to warm the heart,
Ever to my person calling,
From my church I’ll na’er depart.
