Loveless Shadows
Loveless shadows fall about me,
Eyes in sightless sorrow cast,
Emptiness of ages in me,
Labyrinthine, endless vast.
But a fallen wight descending,
In the godless nether gloom,
Down along the valley wending,
As the guns of war resume.
Here aside the mountain river,
With the peat in earthy smell,
Icicles provoke a shiver,
In these lower straits of hell.
Fishes frozen dead forever,
In their cryogenic tomb,
Lost within a soundless never,
Memories a trailing plume.
Devils rove the rocky ridges,
Up behind the ivy wall,
Trolls beneath the stony bridges,
Troublesome and cursed withal.
I am striving for survival,
Keeping weapons close beside,
Eating berries for revival,
Loneliness the drug inside.
Planets wheel above the fire,
When at night I stop to camp,
Temperatures so bitter, dire,
As I brace against the damp.
Danger in the hidden hallows,
Torment lurking in the dark,
Branches like a jutting gallows,
Stars in coldness hitting stark.
Sometimes banshees in the gloaming,
Sometimes faery to beguile,
With my sorry self a roaming,
Cross the tracks and o’er the stile.
Hitching on the trains that clatter,
Smoking bitter cigarettes,
Destiny a joyless matter,
In a life that God forgets.
