A Love Letter From the Moon
The lambency of lunar light,
Reflections so arresting bright,
The waterway’s,
Nocturnal haze,
Presents in soft delight.
The trees in ranks along the banks,
With grassy meadows at the flanks,
The silhouettes,
That time forgets,
With not a thought of thanks.
The poplars and the cyprus grow,
In perfect rays which gods bestow,
From heaven’s height,
In silky night,
An enigmatic flow.
The bridge is distant in the mist,
As softly clacking trains persist,
Hypnotic sounds,
In hallowed grounds,
The smoke a pluming twist.
And here I stand upon the edge,
As moonbeams make their solemn pledge;
“Tis thee I see,
Perusing free,
Among the khaki sedge.
I gift reflections as ye stand,
So lonely on the shadow land,
My yellow gold,
So winsome bold,
And mesmerising grand.
Tis treasure from my inner stores,
Tis bounty ageless as the shores,
Of time which flows,
With endless shows,
Of love which knows no cause.
Espy the nightjars in the trees?
Those minstrels singing to the breeze?
Their tune exclaims,
A joy like flames,
Against the winter freeze.
The merry stars about me too,
Are dancing for the muse in view,
Tis thee they cheer,
From deeps austere,
In shining, silver hue.
Tis love I offer, nothing less,
A charismatic, sweet caress,
Imbued with life,
Though earthly strife,
Would offer such duress.
The shadows cast upon the sheen,
Of water flowing through the green,
Tis even they,
Wouldst pain allay,
In wildernesses mean.
Light and shadow speak of bliss,
Against the world of men remiss,
I pledge my all,
Though ages fall,
By death’s triumphal kiss.”
I thank thee, moon, my darling dear,
In glowing raiment standing clear,
I lift a prayer,
In silent air,
To wash away my fear.
I praise ye, stately queen of all,
My heart bewitched and in thy thrall,
Thy words this eve,
To which I cleave—
They heal the wounds that gall.
I note the coldness setting in,
The crystal aethers pique chagrin,
But by thy face,
In starry lace,
I conjure love within.
Again I’ll meet thee, silver muse,
In overarching spreading blues,
My heart is thine,
Thy heady wine,
Of love I’d never lose.
