October Eulogy
The clouds have wept their sorrow dry,
From out the cold October sky,
The grass is glossy to the eye,
And I am wont to cry.
Upon the ground nasturtiums spread,
With jasmine hung above my head,
To death my merry master’s wed!
The earthy deeps a bed!
This thicket for a mourners troupe!
The trunks a melancholy group,
In dolefulness they stop to stoop,
As pensive flowers droop.
Below the clay, anon to stay,
Sequestered unto judgement day,
And then abruptly borne away,
In earnestness I pray…
Within the keep of death reside!
The heavens where the angels glide!
Invincible and strong inside!
In glory to abide.
I offer thee a loving ode!
Rejoicing in thy dream abode!
With beatitude and bliss bestowed!
And every promise showed!
And as the gardens offer shade,
Wherein my utterings are made,
A mourner hidden in the glade,
Sincerity displayed.
I think again of yesteryear,
The love I knew so strong and clear,
The banishment of every fear,
Our precious friendship dear.
I think again on joyous sport,
And ecstasy of every sort,
And laughter, and a glad rapport,
Such merriment he brought!
So I will sit, as shadows grow,
The memories of him aglow,
Nostalgia to a pitch of woe,
I gift the prayers I know…
