The Triumph of Decay
Delicate the wings presented,
In a tomb of glass to dwell,
Reveries of death invented,
Under time’s pernicious knell.
Colour so prodigious striking,
Decorations cheerful spry,
Every facet apt for liking,
Dainties to divert the eye.
Pulchritude of God’s bestowing,
Prettiness in careful touch,
Paralysed, misfortune showing,
Desolation’s eerie clutch.
Emblematic beauty given,
But a lease of certain span,
Swept away, by ages riven,
Fore to death’s ungainly clan.
Miseries of deformation,
Travesties of slow decay,
Life in doleful reformation,
To the grave and to the clay…
