The Ghosts I Fear
Tis malice lurking at my back, haunting me and vying for attention where I would have peace. My precious equanimity is a red flag to his irascible mind; it provokes him and goads him to new mischief. I told myself in adamant refrains that he would not again see the light of day after I shuttered him out and consigned him to the closet some years ago. Yet, there he is. Swarthy as the midnight hour and malicious as the demons of the pit. Where I walk, he shadows, and tempts me to his fell influence.
Tis anger stinging me in force, emancipated somehow from the cupboard where I put him some seasons ago. There! The ephemeral shadow on the wall, transmogrifying like smoke and difficult to apprehend. That once relevant utility of God, anger, now broken free with the others and garnering irateness where he can, animosity against my fellow man when I would preserve peace. He waits for me with wry patience, unnerving and wanton, waiting for me to trip and land in his clutches, where he can engender obscenity and protestation with glee. How did he get out?
Tis irreverence leaked out of the cupboard and spilled annoyingly on the floor. The vial in which I collected it up must have broken. A bump in the night perhaps? Or a rogue storm shaking the foundations of the house? At any rate, the leakage is profuse as it is noxious. A poison has been discovered at large! A noisome spillage and mistake! As I seek to find a prayerful tone and harness the sincerity belonging to a man of God, I am waylaid by irreverence and the apathy that belongs to the damned. My capacity to care deeply is waning and I am terrified lest my creator disown me!
Tis dolefulness and depression in cooperation in the confines of my bedroom! They are impostors, rogues, charlatans. I can only speculate that they emerged from the plaster or from the ventilation. I have no want of them, yet they are here! I slink away and try to evade them, dancing to the side or nimbly trying to circumnavigate their position, but they are resolute. I surmise that the angels above should race to my predicament and send them to oblivion in the name of Jehovah, but this grand salvation does not occur.
