The Roar of the Wave
Hark the roar of the wave in conditions so grave,
With the elements wicked and wild,
I’m a destitute slave as the thunderclouds rave,
By tempestuous storming beguiled!
With the wrecks of the sea in contemptuous glee,
All the ropes flapping madly about,
And the sails in despair in the blustering air,
As I loose a vociferous shout.
All the pitching and swell like a pall, like a spell,
Serving up a fantastical doom,
I am hopeless to quell this demise in a knell,
All the atmosphere echoing gloom.
I reach out to the Lord who before I deplored,
To the grip of his sanctified hand,
All the saints be adored, by His might underscored,
Pray redeem me by Jesus’ command!
I look up to the sky and the lightning on high,
Through a tumult and madness of wind,
With a rage in mine eye and the rain gliding by,
I am shocked and so badly chagrined.
Then a gap in the clouds through plutonian shrouds,
And a light from beyond the abyss,
Tis the saints in their crowds that my Jesus enshrouds,
With His might like a radiant kiss.
I am struck to the core, gritting teeth in my jaw,
And my senses all dizzied and done,
On the wreckage I’m splayed, void of life, undismayed,
Now a daydream flown up to the sun.
And my corpse but a raft sinking down in the shaft,
Of the deeps where leviathans roam,
As my bodily craft meets a gloom fore and aft,
Under swathing, enveloping foam.
I am lost in the green, in the chasms serene,
With a peace where before tarried hate,
With the corals that glow in the lost undertow,
And the Lord as my ultimate fate.
