If the Sea

If the Sea

If the sea is white and wild,
But darksome too, by thunder styled,
My wits and heart so well beguiled,
I’d seek her like a child.

I’d stray away and leave today,
A sacrifice upon the bay,
Anointed by the ghostly grey,
As porpoise pitch and play.

If the sea is fearless loud,
But also soft, with peace allowed,
I’d step beyond her silver shroud,
And die beneath the cloud.

I’d swim away and leave I say,
A sacrifice so glad and gay,
Anointed by the ocean spray,
In catatonic sway.

If the sea is endless wide,
With mermaid tails and shells inside,
Where mighty mermen dance and glide,
I’d choose her for my bride.

I’d sink away and there I’d stay,
A sacrifice without dismay,
Anointed by the stormy fray,
A vagabond and stray.

If the sea is gifting rain,
In gently uttered soft refrain,
Enough to wash away my pain,
And purge me of my stain.

I’d wend a merry dance and go,
A sacrifice swept down below,
Anointed by the undertow,
Beneath the starry glow.

If the sea lifts up her love,
And sings to God, with birds above,
The host of heaven glad thereof,
As comely as the dove.

I’d seek redemption in her croon,
A sacrifice below the moon,
Anointed by the sea gulls’ tune,
My soul a plaintive swoon.
