A Comet Appears
A comet lights the milky way,
In splendour and delight,
The flowing tail,
So pure and pale,
A ghostly trail,
A bridal veil,
With stardust sprinkled white.
The town is languid in the dark,
And sleeping neath the moon,
The starry show,
A dainty glow,
A bright tableau,
With peace below,
The townsfolk in a swoon.
The buildings are a shadow land,
With astral brightness o’er,
From out the night,
Falls silver light,
A sacred sight,
And winsome bright,
Atop the steeple tower.
The factory is dead of life,
And silent as the grave,
The watchman waits,
Beside the gates,
The comet skates,
In starry straits,
Saluting one so brave.
The river wending serpentine,
With shadows arching down,
Such solemn dark,
Bereft and stark,
The comet’s arc,
A gifted spark,
A jewel upon her gown.
Adventure then a black demise,
Beyond the welkin rim,
The dazzling ray,
In sparkling play,
A shred of day,
Borne far away,
Her fervour waxing dim.
