The Sinking Galleon
Shipwrecked in the raging main!
Descending to the deep,
Pitching swell in storming rain,
The breakers tall and steep.
Nigh one hundred souls went down,
The captain with his crew,
Cast unto the deeps to drown,
With sunlight glancing through.
Gunwhales cracked in splintered shards,
The mainsail ripped in shreds,
Jetsam dashed for countless yards,
With lightning at their heads.
Sinking perilous and long,
Into the ocean maw,
Cries to God their final song,
Then to the ocean floor.
Fish to greet their cursed way,
And creatures of the dark,
Stricken dead in rude dismay,
Then fodder for the shark.
Speak a prayer in earnest tone,
For all the stalwarts lost,
May their souls be mercy shown—
Unto forever crossed…
