Oh Courtesan of Egypt

Oh Courtesan of Egypt

Oh courtesan of Egypt!
Oh bearer of thine own daylight!
Ephemerally draped in azure splendour—
Attired so simply, even as the sky herself dresses!
Thy dormant esprit becomes effervescent so readily, like the waterfall that renews after the spring thaw.
Thou possessest all the refinement and poise of the princesses of Arabia, but thou art more splendid still, even by the puissance of thine own pure heart.
Even as the fulgent sea gives a resplendent echo of the sun,
thou art an apparition of blithely crafted divinity, walking through eternity like the mythical bird that cannot die.
Thy pulchritude is akin to the svelte marble statues that stand in attendance to the ages in the garden of the king.
Content in the radiance
of thine own perfect soul,
thou commandest the day with the same regal aplomb as the queens of the orient.
Thy lips speak power and kindness in equal quantity.
The flowers bow their petals to thy easy eloquence as thou passest.
Thou art the chest of jewels inside the antechamber where the royal servants hide the special gems the king keeps only for the gods.
Thou art the merry fountain that gives life to new melodies of softness and contentment, as the bees wend their sweet business through the dappled light that hangs like a blessing on the grass.
Thou art as kind as the sun in winter, bending to warm the fellahin that toil under the arc of clouds, spread to infinity and over the horizon in fearlessness.
Thou hast a voice like a dulcet whisper. Thou art as charming and mysterious as the shy genies that live in small coloured vials that hang around the neck of the white enchantress of the Nial, who breathes new vigour into the hearts of Egypt’s hopeless, even as the rains fall and replenish the river basin.
Thou hast lips like the red jelly, and a savour as wonderful and as sweet.
As thou placest the vision of thine eyes, healing begins, and thy sparkling smile hums into liveliness, like the zestful acrobats who play in the gazebo of the Pharaoh.
