Dunce in the Shadows

Dunce in the Shadows

Dunce in the shadows, in ugly despair,
Colours are shaded and wan in the air,
Dejected and jaded and whining in fright,
Lonely as dogs in the night.

Out to the valley of ghosts with ye man,
Not in our clique or community clan!
Promptly away to the corners of day,
Sad on the stone ye should stay.

Out to the fish who maraud in the bay,
Out to the breakers where sailor ghosts stay,
Your hope finds a home in the fires below,
There’s none; it has melted like snow.

Out to the desert, where snakes wriggle low,
Out to the plains with the croon of the crow,
Step ye anon into vistas of dark,
Smug with your demon so stark.

Dunce! In the shadows is where you belong!
Wholly rejected from cherubic song,
Stepping on graves and in emptiness lost,
Covered in icicle frost.

Dunce, flee to Hades, beyond the black Styx,
Take all your cronies and all their wry tricks,
Pensive dissolve in infinity’s hand,
Never return to this land!

Dunce in the shadows so maudlin and dumb,
Go find your mummy or suck on your thumb,
Sit at the ashes of stricken desire,
A guillotined head on a spire!

Fall in the ocean or break your fat leg,
Go to the streets but a spectre to beg,
Laugh while you may for your spirit is cursed,
Mute in a pall unreversed.
