Newfound Despair
Halcyon valleys of perfect allure,
Verdant as Babylon, endlessly pure,
Splendid in raiment of heaven in full—
Slaked by the sacrificed bull.
Picturesque villages, lively as bees,
Lazily laughing, as loud as you please,
Pitchers of wine filled to fullness withal,
Gay with a musical call.
Fortitude stemming from feasting and drink,
Concubines pouting their love with a wink,
Festival merriment fused in the heart,
Colours so strikingly smart.
But then a dawning of trouble within,
The battle for power, a consummate din,
Bold opposition to master the world,
Drumming as flags are unfurled.
Blood on the sandbank — the river in red,
Mothers and babes in their beds lying dead,
Rivalry bitter as wormwood — new blood,
Spilled in a waterfall flood.
Torment on torment, such vanity roused,
Demonic captives unleashed and unhoused,
Powers of darkness in bloody delight,
Galloping into the night.
Herein a torment of ultimate doom,
Christ standing stricken, the smoke in a plume,
Rising to heaven from destitute hell,
Everything trapped in the spell.
Only survival is winning through this,
Lucifer blowing his devilish kiss,
Saints in such grievance to God for the pain,
Spiralling, rabid, insane.
Torment more deadly and sicker than last,
Every iniquity brutally cast,
Fomenting violence to sully the day,
Hoping to slaughter and slay.
Paradise scattered like bones on the ground,
Weeping and wailing a harrowing sound,
Beatific memories — chaff in the air,
Sinking to newfound despair.
