Below this Splendid Sky

Below This Splendid Sky

In Galilee, a leper shunned,
By men and women — all,
Begged the Christ for newfound hope;
“I’m helpless, lowly small,

Give me strength to live anew,
The limbs I have are raw,
Ugly black and throbbing blue,
Their aspect I deplore.

Give me succour, give me peace,
Restore me by your light,
Fashion hope, a sweet release,
To remedy my plight.”

Christ in goodness bending low,
Solicitous and kind,
Said, “my healing I bestow,
Pray peace upon your mind.”

With his brother, one in sooth,
The sacred Christ was brave,
“God remains our single truth,
Ye shall not see the grave.

All my love and all my best,
I pledge by God on high,
Rise to walk, your feet caressed,
Below this splendid sky.”
