Awake Again

Awake Again

Awake again in death and lie forlorn,
Neath the glassy welkin, spent of cheer,
Staring at the purple winter morn,
With the north wind calling so austere.

Awake again bereft of care or kin,
Poised to know forever in the grass,
Contemplating netherworlds within,
Lost in sadness as the hours pass.

Awake again to nature’s steely way,
Marching on the fen with hollow light,
Birds — my only fellows through the day,
Melancholic in this pointless plight.

Awake again to see the pallid sun,
Seeking out its zenith like a flare,
Here in fields of loneliness undone,
Mad before the sunlight’s silent stare.
