Moon on the Water

Moon on the Water

Alone — in contemplation waiting,
Bugs atop the river skating,
On the silver surface mellow,
Neath a ghostly moon of yellow.

Trees of autumn, naked, staring,
At my figure, wan, despairing,
On the bank so black and dreary,
With a spirit tired and teary.

Waving ripples, swaying blackly,
Moonlight curtains flowing slackly,
In this night of faerie softness,
Here in painful pangs of lostness.

Pray look on the mirror waters—
Comfort for your sons and daughters,
With the Paraclete in greeting;
Solace at this lonely meeting.

Here, bereft, in crystal moonlight,
Birds awake in pallid midnight,
Know I love your kind, though broken,
With the moon — my precious token…
