Joyous the Babe
Joyous the babe as he sits with me playing,
Sprightly the tune of his manifold glee,
All of his bliss and elation displaying,
Cherubic happiness here on my knee!
Innocence pure as a fountain in summer,
Streaming unendingly, bubbling delight,
Dapper and lively and bright as a drummer—
Glad to find day when he wakes from the night.
Here in the rumpus room he is a magnate,
Lord of his toys in their cherry red ranks,
Sporting in happiness here with his playmate,
Lively with animals, soldiers and tanks.
I was prodigiously blessed, with three children,
This is my youngest and brimming with charms,
Maybe one day he will bring me grandchildren?
Lifting them up to my amorous arms.
In secret I muse at the future awaiting,
Beyond his sweet childhood in silken estate,
Here as I look at him anticipating,
What sort of blessing this man will create.
Maybe a trainer of horses, or athletes?
Maybe a banker or businessman rich?
A lively hotelier spreading out bedsheets?
Our famous singer with sharp perfect pitch?
Truly, for now, I am richer than heaven,
Here with my babe of such gorgeous good cheer,
Brothers to help him, of nine and eleven,
Into the wilds of the future’s frontier.
