She Never Forgot the House Mouse
I see thee my dainty at two in the morn,
Set on the sugar and looking forlorn,
Lonely in shadows and squeaking insane,
Dismal and dreary in rodent sized pain!
I see thee in tears in these hours of night,
Sitting on sugar bemoaning thy plight,
Friendless as babes calling out for their ma,
Friendless and fixed as the lonely north star.
The cupboard quite high like a precipice cliff,
The sugary scent in a saccharine whiff,
Midnight your palace set round you, a tomb,
Candles and parafin lamps for the gloom.
Now prithee mousey I need sugar now,
To place in the coffee with milk from the cow,
Daddy requested it, feeling quite ill,
So lift up two cubes with your small mousey skill.
The mouse heard her pleading and looking around,
Hoisted two cubes with a small squeaking sound,
Milady I’m lonely and give you this boon,
If you’ll return hastily here very soon.
I want little pats placed upon my bright fur,
It’s perfectly lovely I think you’ll concur,
Paradise lies in your comely blue eyes,
Stroking me gently neath star speckled skies.
I pledge my allegiance quaint mousey my dear,
I’ll fly up the stairs and then back, never fear,
I’ll take up the coffee to daddy in bed,
Then down again, racing, I’ll pat your small head.
The kettle set boiling the small girl so quick,
Mixing in milk with a paddle pop stick,
Stirring in sugar retrieved from the mouse,
Up the stairs racing within their small house.
Just as she promised, in moments, returned,
All done my deary β I’m not even burned,
Now brace thyself promptly I’ll pat thee right now,
Gently all over with joy on mine brow.
The mouse settled smugly, the girl stroked his form,
Silky and sleek and like eiderdown warm,
The mouse started singing a gleeful refrain,
Oh gosh this is good I was going insane!
Staring at shadows so gloomily set,
Up on the cupboard, mine high parapet,
Then thou camest visiting me in my bowl,
At two in the morn, in a desperate hole.
The mouse sang a very small opera for her,
So very glad of her touch on his fur,
The little voice rising, a booming refrain,
Swinging a toothpick, a small dancer’s cane.
The girl was elated, his gladness restored,
The miniscule tune she sincerely adored,
The mouse had a halo of love round about,
Her applaud was giggle and dainty bright shout.
