The Lady in Pink (La Dame en Rose)
The manor house set at Ixelles, by the lake,
The lady in pink, with this box, a keepsake.
A flowing long dress, rippling cloth, pearly white,
A Japanese ornament held in the light.
“Japonisme” as the gimmick, the fad,
Ornaments special that have to be had!
This one, in red, and encrusted with gold,
Latches that flip, such a pleasure to hold!
Japanese trinkets in genious made,
The lure of the orient, finely displayed,
I’ll place my gold brooch inside, red rubies bright,
My heirloom from grandmama, a ghost now, a wight.
Next to my bed, when I lay down my head,
My cute Japonisme, that honours the dead,
A sacred memento, this precious heirloom,
Sweet grandmama’s face, in a picturesque tomb.
