Nine Muses, Nine Flames

Nine Muses, Nine Flames

Calliope is chief of all the muses,
Her voice presents a gateway to her love,
Heaven’s gifts she joyfully diffuses,
Melodies that rouse the gods above!

Clio sees the past in crystal vision,
Myths as well her purview and her field,
The lyre sounding bright, with her precision,
The vaults of time within her bosom sealed.

Polyhymnia is pure in spirit,
Sacred hymns and poetry she wields,
Love and romance does her flame inspirit,
Unto her the fair Adonis yields.

Euterpe is vibrant in her pleasure,
Also musical, and plays the flute,
Lyric poems come from her, like treasure,
“The giver of delight” that men salute.

Terpsichore is known for dance and chorus,
Her very name implies a dancing skill,
Gacefully she roves the stage before us,
Her inspiration dazzling us, a thrill.

Erato loves literature and science,
Her passion flaring brave erotic glee,
Malus is her consort and her lover,
She plays the small kithara lovingly.

Melpomene, a songstress and a singer,
Zeus’s daughter, known for tragedy,
She holds a mask for theatre in her finger,
Vines and grapes adorn her tastefully.

Thalia is humourous and sprightly,
Comedy and poetry she guides,
Playing her bright trumpet so adroitly,
A love of brightness in her heart abides.

Urania is goddess of the starlight,
Astronomy and navigation too,
Reading stars like words in heaven’s firelight,
Universal love she’ll bring to you!
