Sticks and Stones

Sticks and Stones

Sticks and stones will break my bones,
And names will always hurt me,
Hateful jibes in heated tones,
To brand my life unworthy.

Sticks and stones will batter one,
And names are also deadly,
Scorching vicious, like the sun,
With contumely in medley.

Sticks and stones will bruise my limbs,
And words — a poisoned chalice,
Wreaking havoc in the soul,
A cataclysmic malice.

Sticks and stones, a tackle rough,
And words are just as galling,
Slurs and slander just as tough,
With overtones appalling.

Sticks and stones will crush my limbs,
And words they sting like bees!
Spite and venom spat in whims,
As painful as you please!

Sticks and stones cause injury,
And words — more crippling yet,
Enemies who badger me,
With hate I can’t forget.

Sticks and stones can end my time,
But words can kill my soul,
Dead bodies don’t avenge a crime,
But words can slay one whole.

Sticks and stones are criminal,
But words can murder too,
Emerging from their wrath, I’m dead,
A corpse so deathly blue.
