Oh Nitingale

Oh Nitingale

Unfetter me from sorrow,
Frail bird of russet brown,
Sweeter than the flute your voice,
A glorifying crown!

Wend a gladness into me,
By your prodigious grace,
Elevate my heart in glee,
And light mine weary face.

Bolster me with melodies,
From heaven brightly plucked,
I say this in despondency;
I’ll surely self destruct!

Standing as the highest muse,
Enraptured in your tune,
Upon the weeping willow poised,
A providential boon!

Help me see the rays of light,
That emanate from you,
Make my disposition bright,
And not so lowly blue.

I look to you, in endless love,
My adoration firm,
You, a perfect fount of grace,
When dark I sink, infirm.

Oh nitingale, sing out my name!
And sing it with delight,
Your pale breast, I love it best,
Your sun the bane of night!
