Green for a Garment

Green for a Garment

Oh father earth, in robes of green displayed!
Fecund vales of verdure — giving life,
Paradise in greenery arrayed,
Demeter, your muse and faithful wife…

Goddess of the harvest and of grain,
Agriculture is her very heart,
Rousing buds and flowers with the rain,
The wisdom of the earth she does impart.

Seasons wheeling gently on through time,
Now with flowers spread, now winter bleak,
Emerald and jade in every clime;
Only hues of green dost my heart seek!

Fields ploughed deep and spread with sandy grain,
Reaching stems and vegetables in growth,
Every glad profusion on the plain,
Green the flag of life, aye, by my troth!

Canopies in decorated halls,
The Amazon, abundant to the hilt!
Stormy rain in luscious, sweeping squalls,
A palace green, and gloriously built!

The Congo and the Burmese tropics lush,
Father earth and Demeter entwined,
Overseen by sunset’s winsome blush,
Only green is what I hope to find!

Grassy plains and highlands cold as ice,
Moorlands damp, in heather blankets spread,
Oriental farms producing spice,
Lay me down upon your grassy bed!

Green as Ireland’s lucky clover leaves,
Bells of Ireland, pretty as a dress,
Bell-shaped beauties draped from o’er the eaves,
Beatitude in sunlight’s sweet caress!

Hydrangea and chrysanthemum in green,
Lovingly set out in gardens full,
Flower gems that grace the eye when seen,
The farmer’s paddock keeping in the bull.

Children playing gaily in the groves,
Animals and pets — all framed in green,
Frolicing in earthy treasure troves,
Abandonment and bliss in every scene.

Father earth and Demeter in love!
Spilling forth their offspring, gorgeous green,
Man’s delight, with heaven up above,
Father earth prolific with his queen…
