An Ornament for Thee

An Ornament for Thee

An ornament for thee, my love,
Chrysanthemum, in red,
A symbol of longevity,
With petals white, like thread.

Just like the fabled amaranth,
It yields eternal light—
Incentive when despair would claim,
Thy hope or blind thy sight.

An ornament to coax thy heart!
A promise winsome fair,
The aspect of euphoria,
The prize of nature’s flair!

Assurance for eternity;
The garden ever green,
Alive in sure fecundity,
The sky in azure sheen.

Aye, fortify thyself anon—
This peace sign, like a dove,
Announcing newfound fortitude,
For thee, my ladylove.

The hanging pall of deathly doubt?
The spectre of dismay?
Rebuffed in nature’s hopeful shout—
Chrysanthemum, so gay!

When all the dark affairs of men,
Would see thee sore distressed,
Behold this ornament in white,
And thereby stand impressed.

A red to cause a rosy blush,
A gladness on thy cheek,
When raw depression strikes thee down,
The touch of nature seek.

Know every bloom is unafraid!
As gallant as a ship!
Na’er frown again at ruthless men,
But in the garden slip.

Peruse the grass, in silence cast,
And wait, for certainly,
Chrysanthemum in red and white,
Will rouse thy sense of glee.

An ornament with soothing force,
A secret spoken soft,
Connecting thee in certainty,
With holy God aloft…
