Oh Dragonfly
Oh dragonfly, in delicate dismay!
Darting joyous through the afternoon,
Roused to agitation and in haste,
Effervescent neath the rising moon.
Buzzing — with a madly roving flight,
Through the passionfruit and vineyard leaves,
Underneath the barnyard’s lofty roof,
Underneath the overhanging eaves.
Pausing never, gliding through the gloam,
Twirling flight, enraptured and in glee,
Navigating softly flowing streams,
Plunging on in pleasure, sailing free.
Over where the lilly pads are bunched,
Spread about the pond in white and green,
You conduct your neverending way,
Into garden vistas yet unseen…
Underneath the oak with shadows hung,
Up into the hills in dappled light,
Through the fig trees yielding luscious fruit,
Through the farm with absolute delight.
Down along the watercourse and weir,
Ecstasy in glassy water tints,
Racing ever, fast, devoid of fear,
Mindless happy in your busy sprints.
Over grasses hemmed by stony walls,
Through mosquito clouds and falling rain,
Onward, to the brave unknown you go,
In your whirring, purring, little plane.
A wild propeller, spinning and abuzz,
As you peruse the lakes replete with fish,
Through the reeds and rushes, filled with zest,
Midges, moths, mosquitos for a dish.
Gossamer embroidery your wings,
Gemstone colours glinting from your back,
Never cowed to weariness or woe,
Merry flight an endless zig zag tack.
Fleeting as a comet is your life,
A speeding dalliance in dazzling day,
Like the breakers — rising and then gone,
Roused to life and then you’re sucked away.
But your heart is gaiety itself!
Enthusiasm brave unto the last,
I salute your sprightliness and hope,
Winsome gorgeous as you hurry past…
