Black on Black
Black — the paradigm of final judgement,
A tumbling turmoil, destined for demise,
Black as coal, in lightless bedrock hidden,
Slick obsidian the starless skies,
Black — the death of daylight in the night shades,
Naïveté, a blindfold, holding fast,
Black, the mad momentum of our anger,
A doomsday knell upon the planet cast!
Black — the fever grip of lamentation,
Hopeful dreams forsaken in the clay,
Destinies in spiralling perdition,
Hearts that wed the night, despising day,
Black — the sorrow screaming in the body,
Ghosts and terrors grappling for release,
Mouths awry, in terminal depression,
Hate in irreversible increase!
Black — the silhouette upon the skyline,
Cities wracked with homelessness and loss,
Refuse and detritus, like confetti,
Human habitations heaped in dross,
Black — the cemetery’s sprawling meadow,
Souls of the departed under stones,
Roving rain above a blessed whisper,
To this citadel of buried bones,
Black — the weight of hell upon our spirits,
Burdened, with a mammoth span of time,
Infinite, eternity the sentence,
Set against the vileness of our crime,
Black — the worthless wages of false worship,
Hubris is a tempting, golden prize!
Dead as dead, in God’s esteemed opinion,
A fantasy, that melts before the eyes,
Black — the skew relationships and malice,
Paralysing our communal walk,
Sin and death, the children of the devil,
Growing daily from our fallen stock,
Black — the landscape desolate in shadows,
Crime in brazen violence meted out,
Guns and wild machetes causing mayhem,
Criminals with overwhelming clout,
Black — the strong emotions of nostalgia,
Yearning for the sunshine rays of yore,
Hymns in brave audaciousness and pleading,
To relive the love we knew before,
Black — the river’s twisting through the moonlight,
Carrying away the world we knew,
Kneeling on the ground in brave prostration,
God almighty — I will pray to You!
Black — the cloaking silence of Our Father,
Set in covert puissance up above,
“Despite the evil ravening the season,
I will pray for you, for healing love…”
