The Bat Queen
The bat queen found a fisherman,
Asleep upon the sand,
Reposing on the pebbly shore,
A lute next to his hand,
I wonder if this is a feast,
Or friend with whom to sport?
I wonder if he’s friendly,
Or a moody, mumpish sort?
I wonder if he’ll care that I,
Have wings instead of arms,
I wonder if I wink at him,
He’ll melt under my charms?
I wonder if he’ll smile at me,
When given time he wakes?
Should I prepare a breakfast meal,
Of nicely frosted cakes?
I find him rather pungent, yes,
With hair that smells like fish,
But that does not deter me,
From my deeply cherished wish,
To find a husband for my nest,
With whom to laugh and softly jest,
His head upon my bosom pressed,
My lips by his sweet lips caressed!
A man to cherish with my wings,
As at our marriage feast he sings,
And to my body gently clings,
Presenting golden wedding rings!
I should announce our union soon,
Unto the bats below the moon,
As clutching him, I chat and swoon,
His love and cheer a happy boon!
The man awoke by lapping brine,
Declaring, where’s my fishing line?
I cannot find a clue nor sign,
Nor see that precious rod of mine!
And looking up he saw the queen,
With wings outspread and face aglow,
My goodness gracious, what a sight!
Your wings are very big you know!
Good sir, do you approve of me?
Here in this cove next to the sea,
I have been waiting here with glee,
To know what sort of man you’d be!
My dearest bat, I’ll tell you this,
Before you ask me for a kiss,
I have a problem with my nose,
It makes a sort of feline hiss,
This happens when I blow my nose,
The pollenated wind a curse,
My handkerchief can’t stop the sound,
And tissues only make it worse!
How does this knowledge sit with you?
Could you forgive a hiss or two?
Before we bolt into the blue
Pray tell me what you want to do!
I want you and your special hiss!
Your fishy hair and pungent kiss!
I want to show you to the bats,
And live with you in wedded bliss!
Well hold me then, with your big wings,
As in their warm embrace I sink,
Enfolded like a swaddled babe,
The comfort darkness black as ink!
I’ll catch you fish and find you crabs,
And you can keep me in your nest,
Forever fanning me with love,
Until with little bats we’re blessed!
